Leak or Evaporation

To determine whether water loss in your pool is due to evaporation or a leak, performing a bucket test can be very helpful. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

01

Turn off your Autofill

Make sure any AutoFill system is turned off during the entire testing period.

02

Place the filled bucket on the first step

Fill a large bucket with your pool water about an inch from the top and place the filled bucket on the top step of the pool.

03

Mark the levels of water with a piece of tape

Mark the level of water in the bucket with a piece of tape, making sure there is no space between the tape and water level. Do the same with the level of the pool water on the outside of the bucket. Leave the bucket in place for 24 hours with the pool running as normal, but without using the pool during this time.

04

Measure the water loss after 24hrs

After 24 hours, compare the two water levels. If both levels are similar, evaporation is likely the cause. If the pool has lost more water than the bucket, you may have a leak and it's time to call LEAK FINDERS.  This test can be performed in any weather conditions and will help you avoid unnecessary service calls and expenses!
